A 14‑year‑old boy lost his life after a river carried away two children in the [Dapchi community](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dapchi) of the [Bursari Local Government Area](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bursari), Yobe State.
The tragedy occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, 4 October 2026, in the Unguwar Bulama Alhaji Ahmadu locality of Dapchi.
According to the [Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA)](https://www.yobestate.gov.ng/), the river swept both youngsters, prompting an immediate search‑and‑rescue operation involving state and local emergency teams together with local divers.
One of the children, identified as 14‑year‑old Goni Mustapha, was recovered from the water at roughly 5:00 p.m.
Rescue personnel were still searching for the second child at the time the report was filed.
The incident has revived concerns about the dangers posed by swollen rivers and other water bodies during the rainy season, when water levels and currents can rise rapidly.
Residents, especially parents and guardians, have been urged to keep children away from rivers and streams unless supervised by an adult.
The public is also advised not to attempt crossing fast‑flowing or flooded rivers and to alert rescue teams or community leaders immediately if someone falls into water.
Authorities and community leaders are expected to continue the search for the missing child while working to prevent similar accidents in the future.
