2027 Presidency: ADC Challenges Tinubu, APC to Open Electoral Contest

The African Democratic Congress has called on President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress to ensure an open and unhindered electoral process for the 2027 general elections. The party alleged that legal maneuvers are being used to undermine its participation following significant campaign rallies in Sokoto and Kebbi states.

Following massive political rallies in Sokoto and Kebbi states, the African Democratic Congress has challenged President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress to permit a transparent and credible electoral process in the upcoming 2027 general elections. The opposition party accused the administration of leveraging judicial channels to suppress its involvement in the political race.

Senator Austin Akobundu, the Director-General of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, issued the challenge while addressing the large crowds that turned out to welcome the party's standard-bearer, Atiku Abubakar, alongside his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi, during their campaign stops in the North-West region.

What did the ADC campaign leadership say?

Akobundu characterized the substantial public turnout as a clear indication of mounting citizen support for the ADC movement and a collective resolve by Nigerians to actively shape the nation's political trajectory. He commended the loyalists and residents who participated in the events, calling the gatherings a powerful demonstration of grassroots backing.

However, the campaign director criticized the federal administration, arguing that its reliance on judicial interventions to impede the party's progress casts doubt on its commitment to democratic competition. He urged the government to prove its strength through the ballot box rather than administrative or legal blockades.

"If the Federal Government and the APC believe they have the capacity to win, let them allow a free and fair election. Let Nigerians choose without intimidation, obstruction or interference. They must stop trying to muzzle the political space and using a backdoor court process to remove us from the contest," Akobundu stated.

What is the party's appeal to supporters?

Emphasizing the importance of open political discourse, Akobundu maintained that the electorate must be permitted to evaluate alternative policies, participate in rallies, and cast their votes free from coercion. He encouraged party members to maintain their composure and continue their mobilization efforts peacefully.

"The ballot must remain the people's choice, and every party must be allowed to campaign freely," he concluded.
