Authorities in Abia State have officially denied claims that have gone viral online, alleging the apprehension of 488 Boko Haram members within the state. The Abia State Police Command has issued a statement urging the public to disregard such misinformation, which it warns could incite unnecessary fear.
DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, acting on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, stated that the video circulating with the false claim is not current. She explained that the footage is an old broadcast, recorded more than eleven years ago, and bears no relation to the present security situation in Abia State.
The police characterized the report as misleading, designed to create panic among the populace.
"As the lead internal security agency, the command assures residents of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging citizens to go about their lawful activities without apprehension," the statement read.
The command further appealed to the public to support its security operations by actively rejecting fake news and relying solely on credible, verified information sources.
Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa emphasized the dangers of spreading falsehoods, noting that such actions could disrupt public peace and security. He warned that individuals found guilty of disseminating false information would face legal consequences, including prosecution under relevant laws such as the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrime Act.
The police have advised residents to remain vigilant and cooperate in maintaining the state's peace by refusing to engage with or spread misinformation.
