On Tuesday, gunmen opened fire on the convoy of [African Democratic Congress](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Democratic_Congress) senatorial candidate Herberta Okonofua and party chieftain Kenneth Imansuagbon in Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State, but both escaped without injury.
The attack left ADC supporter Jerry Oliha wounded; he was rushed to Irrua Specialist Hospital for treatment. The party’s State Publicity Secretary, Chris Ojeikere, said the incident was part of a broader pattern of violence targeting opposition figures in the state, citing similar episodes in Etsako East, Owan West and Owan East LGAs.
**What was the extent of the assault?**
According to Ojeikere, the entourage was ambushed three times on the same day – first in Ward 4, then in Ward 5, and finally in Ward 6 of Igueben. The third encounter occurred at the premises of the Enogie of Igueben, where Oliha was shot.
**Who does the ADC blame?**
The party alleges that the assailants were loyalists of the ruling [All Progressives Congress](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Progressives_Congress) led by Igueben Local Government Council Chairman Endurance Azemegbe. Azemegbe refuted the accusation, stating, "I was not around and I don’t know what happened. I am just hearing this from you. I can assure you that I will investigate the matter. The thing is strange to me. We are peaceful people and brothers in Igueben."
**What have the authorities said?**
Edo State Police Public Relations Officer ASP Eno Ikoedem said the police could not immediately confirm the incident but pledged to intervene once a formal report is filed. The ADC has informed the Divisional Police Officer in Igueben and is calling for a thorough investigation.
The incident underscores rising tensions ahead of upcoming elections, with the ADC urging security agencies to protect opposition members and their supporters.
