Akwa Ibom Police Launch Probe into Alleged N25,000 Transit Fee Scam on Borno‑Deployed Officers

The Nigeria Police Force in Akwa Ibom State has ordered an inquiry after reports that officers returning from a Borno counter‑insurgency deployment were forced to pay a N25,000 transit fee. The command says no such fee is authorised and will investigate any wrongdoing.

The [Nigeria Police Force](https://www.npf.gov.ng/) in [Akwa Ibom State](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akwa_Ibom_State) has ordered an inquiry into claims that officers returning from a counter‑insurgency mission in [Borno State](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borno_State) were forced to pay N25,000 each as a “transit fee”.

The allegation was first reported by SaharaReporters, prompting the command to clarify that personnel deployed from Uyo to Jaji and back are not expected to finance their official transport.

In a statement released on Monday, the command’s spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent Timfon John, said the squadron covers transportation costs for its members.

“There is no authorised N25,000 transit fee, and officers are not required to fund their official transportation,” John said.

Nevertheless, the command said it would not dismiss the claim outright and has ordered an inquiry to determine what happened and identify any responsible parties.

The statement added that any officer found to have demanded or collected money without proper authorisation would face disciplinary measures and, where appropriate, prosecution.

“The Command takes any allegation of unauthorised demand or collection seriously,” the police said, urging anyone with direct knowledge to report details through the proper channels.

The investigation will be evidence‑based and conducted fairly, and the public was asked to treat the allegation as unverified while the probe is ongoing.
