Amnesty International Nigeria on Thursday urged [Madonna University](https://www.madonnauniversity.edu.ng)’s Elele Campus in [Rivers State](https://www.riversstate.gov.ng) to overturn the dismissal of a final‑year nursing student and the suspension of fourteen other 500‑level students after a [TikTok](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TikTok) video went viral, calling the disciplinary measures disproportionate and harmful to academic freedom.

The university expelled one final‑year nursing student and suspended fourteen other 500‑level students following the widespread circulation of the video on TikTok.

[Amnesty International](https://www.amnesty.org) posted its appeal on its X platform on Thursday, describing the sanctions as “disproportionate.”

The rights group warned that heavy‑handed academic or disciplinary actions could jeopardise the students’ academic progress and create a chilling effect on their freedoms of expression, education and academic freedom.

“The expulsion and suspension are disproportionate,” Amnesty International said in its statement.

Amnesty also called on the institution to ensure its policies and disciplinary procedures conform to international human‑rights standards and to resolve the dispute through dialogue and mediation.
