Joe Igbokwe, a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has spoken out against the increasing rental costs in Nigeria, highlighting the severe impact it has on residents, especially in Lagos state.
In a recent Facebook post, Igbokwe urged the state government to take decisive action against the avarice displayed by landlords in the region.
He expressed that the greed of these landlords is so pronounced that it drives desperate Nigerians to engage in theft just to afford a place to live. Igbokwe included images from a demonstration protesting against high rents in Lagos, writing:
‘’LANDLORDS IN LAGOS ARE KILLING AND CHOKING LAGOSIANS WITH HUGE HOUSE RENT. The government must act swiftly to regulate these greedy landlords, particularly in Lagos. There are no rules left. Landlords are making it impossible for people to rent houses; they are merciless and lack compassion. They continue to demand excessive rents for properties they developed as far back as 1970. The Lagos State Government (LASG) can rectify this situation quickly. It is damaging local businesses and is inhumane. This is compelling Lagosians to resort to theft.’’
Igbokwe's remarks have sparked discussions around the urgent need for government intervention in the housing sector amid rising economic strains on citizens.
