Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, has disclosed that the 2026 World Cup could serve as Lionel Messi’s final appearance on football's grandest stage.
Scaloni shared this insight during a press conference that preceded Argentina's international friendly against Zambia.
At 38 years old, Messi has yet to officially announce whether he will participate in the tournament, although he played a pivotal role in helping Argentina secure qualification.
The coach emphasized his goal is to ensure Messi attends and enjoys what could potentially be his last World Cup experience.
"What matters is that he comes and enjoys being at a World Cup event, which, in theory, will be his final one," Scaloni stated.
He added, "We want him to savor the moments, as events like these are something you truly miss once they are over."
Scaloni went on to mention that the majority of regular squad members are anticipated to participate, outlining the forthcoming matches as a crucial test before any modifications to the lineup are made.
"Subsequently, we will implement some changes to assess some younger players, but the intention is to field our most familiar lineup," he concluded.
