[Bayern Munich](https://www.bayern.com) announced on Saturday that head coach [Vincent Kompany](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_Kompany) is still receiving hospital treatment for a virus that forced him to collapse on the training field on Friday. The 40‑year‑old former Manchester City captain is in a stable condition, but medical examinations are ongoing and his return is expected to take weeks rather than days. Assistant coach Aaron Danks will lead the team for Sunday’s Bundesliga clash with Freiburg while Kompany continues his recovery.
**What did the club say about Kompany’s condition?**
Sporting director [Max Eberl](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Eberl) told reporters that doctors are still determining the exact nature of the illness and that no definitive timetable has been set. “Vinnie will be given all the time he needs. We’re not starting to put together any timeframes. We need to firstly figure out what it is and then we’ll discuss calmly what recovery time is to be. We won’t be talking about days, but weeks,” he explained.
**Who will oversee the team in Kompany’s absence?**
Assistant coach Aaron Danks, who briefly spoke with Kompany on Friday, said his conversation was limited to wishing the coach well and checking on his health. “I explained to him that we wouldn’t be having any football conversations. It was just checking in on his health and making sure he’s OK. All the football operations are in our hands and we’ll work together as a team to keep the club moving forward,” Danks said.
The club’s second‑team match was postponed after the collapse, but Eberl indicated that Bayern will not seek to delay the senior side’s fixture against Freiburg. “I think the greatest joy for Vinnie would be for us to play well tomorrow and, ideally, get a positive result. That would probably be one of the best things we could do to help him recover,” he added.
Germany captain Joshua Kimmich, who has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday, will also miss the Sunday game, Danks confirmed.
Komppany later returned to the dugout for Bayern’s home game against Arsenal on Wednesday, although he missed the pre‑match press conference because of the virus. After the match he admitted that his body had forced him to stop pushing through the illness: “I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn’t listen to my body — and then at some point my body just said, ‘enough is enough!’”
The defending champions remain atop the Bundesliga table, one point ahead of Freiburg, and will travel to Madrid for a Champions League tie against Atletico on 3 November.
