On October 5, 2026, the [Concerned Pensioners Association (CPA)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pension) of Benue State publicly urged the [Benue State Government](https://www.benue.gov.ng) to settle pension arrears, gratuities and harmonisation claims that have been outstanding for 27 years, demanding immediate payment to relieve retirees who have been waiting since 1999.
The call was issued in a statement released to mark [Pensioners Day](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pensioners%27_Day), an annual observance in Nigeria that highlights the plight of retired civil servants. The CPA said the day should draw attention to the chronic neglect of pensioners who have served the public sector for decades.
According to the association’s chairman, Akosu Orban, and secretary, Daniel Kaaser, Benue retirees have endured prolonged delays in receiving benefits they consider rightfully theirs. They noted that the unpaid amounts include back‑dated pensions, gratuities and the adjustments required by the 1999 pension rate harmonisation exercise.
The group warned that the continued failure to clear these arrears erodes the dignity of pensioners and creates severe financial hardship for many who depend on the payments for daily sustenance.
The CPA also criticised the [Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigeria_Union_of_Pensioners), accusing it of insufficient advocacy for retirees, especially on matters of welfare. It questioned the union’s participation in Pensioners Day activities compared with its involvement in Workers Day, arguing that pensioners need a dedicated voice.
Citing a perceived gap in representation, the association explained that it was formed to address the unique challenges faced by retired workers, which it says have been overlooked by the NUP, whose focus it claims is primarily on active employees.
Describing its emergence as a turning point, the CPA said it will concentrate on the immediate financial needs of retirees while also providing a platform to champion their rights and overall welfare.
In its final appeal, the association urged the Benue State Government to act swiftly and fulfil its statutory obligations to pensioners, emphasizing that honoring these commitments is essential for the dignity and well‑being of senior citizens.
The statement concluded with a call for broader societal recognition of senior citizens, urging all stakeholders to support measures that ensure pensioners receive what is due to them on this Pensioners Day.
