Benue SEMA Sounds Alarm As Snakebite Incidents Surge Among Farmers and IDPs

The Benue State Emergency Management Agency has expressed deep concern over the rising frequency of snakebite incidents affecting farmers and internally displaced persons across the state. Authorities have urged residents to seek immediate medical intervention following any snake encounters while cautioning against the politicization of public health challenges.

The Benue State Government has expressed serious concern regarding an escalating wave of snakebite cases impacting agricultural workers, internally displaced persons, and other vulnerable populations throughout the region. This alarming trend was highlighted following recent medical emergencies involving two individuals from the Daudu 1 displacement facility located within the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

The affected individuals, identified as 35-year-old Isaac Shula and 19-year- old Mbapuun Tyoshio, sustained venomous bites while carrying out routine farming activities. Both victims required urgent medical transfer to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital situated in Makurdi, where their treatment and recovery are being coordinated under the direct supervision of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

What are the primary factors driving the agency's warning?

Addressing the situation, Dr Amos Dzungwe, the health focal person for SEMA, noted that encounters with venomous snakes have witnessed a notable upward trajectory across multiple communities within the state. Dzungwe explained that the agency has received numerous appeals for medical intervention from diverse localities, highlighting the expanding magnitude of the public health challenge.

According to the health official, two individuals who suffered snakebite injuries have successfully recuperated and received their discharge papers within the preceding fortnight, while additional patients continue to undergo medical management at the healthcare facility.

Why is prompt medical attention critical for snakebite victims?

Dzungwe strongly cautioned residents against delaying professional medical care following a snakebite, emphasizing that hesitation significantly increases the likelihood of severe medical complications and life-threatening outcomes. He reiterated that anyone who suffers a snakebite must proceed instantly to an accredited medical facility for clinical assessment and the administration of appropriate antivenom therapies.

In a parallel statement, the emergency management body urged the general public to disregard misleading claims and politically motivated narratives concerning snakebite occurrences within the state, particularly those touching upon displaced populations. The agency emphasized that humanitarian emergencies and public health matters affecting vulnerable citizens demand responsible handling rather than exploitation for partisan agendas.
