A Catholic priest, Father Angelo Chidi Unegbu, has publicly criticized the government of Anambra State for its recent decision to destroy and burn items associated with a herbalist following the dismantling of his shrine.
The incident involved the shrine of Chidozie Nwangwu, widely known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, who received an 11-month prison sentence from a High Court in Awka for his role in ritualistic practices known as 'oke ite' and other related offenses.
In response to the destruction of the herbalist's shrine, Father Angelo condemned the act as inhumane.
He questioned, "Why are you destroying and burning the objects in the shrine? How can you set fire to things you do not comprehend?"
Father Angelo further pointed out the need for experts to explore the significance and history behind the artifacts. He argued, "An examination of these items could have provided insights into the activities of those involved in the Okite practices and their networks."
He suggested that the artifacts should have been preserved in a museum, stating, "Who enters a man's home without his permission? It is strangely ironic that some people are celebrating this destruction."
The priest concluded by reflecting on the criticism he faces for his views, asking, "Every time I make such statements, people often question: Are you truly a Catholic priest? My response is: Are you truly human?"
