Constitutional Lawyer Says State Police Won’t Fix Nigeria’s Security Woes

Constitutional lawyer Magaji Mato, SAN, argues that creating state police will not address Nigeria’s security problems, citing a lack of political will as the core issue.

Constitutional lawyer [Magaji Mato](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magaji_Mato), SAN, contends that establishing state police forces will not resolve the nation’s security challenges, emphasizing that the real obstacle is insufficient political will.

In an interview with ARISE News on Monday, Mato asserted that Nigeria already possesses the manpower and resources needed to combat terrorism and banditry without fragmenting the police structure.

“It is actually not about the state police. It is not the state policing that will bring about security,” he said, adding that the government has not shown the resolve required to tackle insecurity and that many of the threats are politically driven.

Mato warned that state police could be misused by governors and other political figures, raising concerns that opposition members might be barred from operating in certain states.

He urged the country to place national unity above partisan or personal interests, stating, “What we lack is the willpower and the ability to stand for the truth when it comes to the issue of the Nigerian state.”

According to Mato, leaders must treat the Nigerian project seriously and protect national interests rather than favouring their parties or individual agendas.
