The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has relieved coach Hossam Hassan from his post as head coach of the national team. The decision to sack Hassan was revealed on Saturday night following a day-long meeting of the federation's board of directors.
Hassan's dismissal was the result of a turbulent period for the 60-year-old legend who had been embroiled in marital issues with his two wives. He was handed a media ban by the country's leadership earlier this month, while his three-match FIFA ban was also confirmed in late October.
The EFA therefore stressed that Hassan's dismissal was necessary to maintain team stability.
In a statement on its website, the EFA said the scandals had created a negative impact on the positive image of the national team, hence the need for coach Hassan to step down as coach of the men's national team.
"In light of the meeting of the Federation's Board of Directors, which began this morning and is still in session, and after studying all the circumstances and events that took place during the past period, and the resulting repercussions and negative impact on the positive image of our national team and its stability, the Board of Directors decided, within the framework of its responsibility, to thank coach Hossam Hassan and his technical and administrative staff based on the terms of the contract.
"The Federation appreciates the efforts and contributions made by coach Hossam Hassan during his tenure as head coach, and wishes him continued success in his future career."
In the same breath, the EFA announced coach Ali Maher as the new head coach and technical director of the national team. The former Pyramids FC coach was also requested to present his vision and staffing for the team during his tenure.
The federation further asked fans to continue their support for the national team in future matches and competitions.
"In this context, the Egyptian Football Association renews its call to the Egyptian football fans and all supporters of the national team to continue their support and rally around the team during this important stage, in order to support our national team's journey towards achieving the aspirations of its fans."
Hassan, appointed February 2024, lasted almost three years as Egypt head coach.
The 52-year-old led Egypt to their first World Cup match win in 92 years, and a first-ever knockout appearance for the Pharaohs.
He masterminded a country-record 19-match unbeaten run during a 38-match tenure that produced 21 wins.
