President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has revealed Turkiye's aim of achieving a $5 billion trade volume with Nigeria. The Turkish leader announced this during a press conference in Ankara on Tuesday, held alongside Nigerian President Bola Tinubu as part of his official visit to Turkiye.

Erdogan confirmed that discussions regarding this partnership are already underway. He asserted that the creation of a Joint Economy and Trade Committee between both nations will pave the way for expanding Turkish investments in Nigeria to help realize this ambitious target.

He acknowledged President Tinubu’s commitment and resolve towards attracting investments into Nigeria, noting the presence of several ministers and high- ranking officials as a clear demonstration of this intent.

He stated, “Today, we conducted a comprehensive review of our relations with the esteemed president and his delegation in the fields of trade, investments, energy, education, and defense industry.

“In our discussions, we recognized the considerable potential in trade and investment sectors. Our commitment to achieving the $5 billion trade volume was reaffirmed, and we deliberated on the necessary steps to reach this goal.”

Erdogan also highlighted the significance of supporting investments in Nigeria, believing that the newly formed Joint Economy and Trade Committee will play a crucial role in this aspect.

He commended Nigeria’s strides in revitalizing its energy sector, which he noted is key to restructuring the nation's economy.

In matters concerning terrorism, Erdogan offered Turkiye’s assistance, citing its history in combating insurgency. He lamented the rise of terrorist groups, particularly in the Sahel region of Africa, that threaten continental peace. “We stand by the friendly people of Nigeria in their fight against terrorism under the leadership of President Tinubu,” he reiterated.

Furthermore, Erdogan mentioned discussions on enhancing cooperation in military training and intelligence sharing, promising to leverage Turkiye's experiences in countering terrorism.

In his response, President Tinubu expressed appreciation towards Turkiye for its collaborative spirit in promoting global freedom, prosperity, and stability. He underscored the necessity of fostering an inclusive economy that serves vulnerable populations.

Tinubu emphasized, “It is crucial that we engage in trade and business without restrictions, creating opportunities for those eager to learn and prosper. Key concerns for the nations involved include building an inclusive economy and ensuring world peace.”

Despite ongoing instability, the President affirmed Nigeria's commitment to playing a significant role in the peace process throughout Africa. “We discussed strategies against terrorism and how to dismantle agents of destabilization,” he added, while praising Erdogan for his dedication to global peace, particularly regarding efforts in Somalia.

Following their bilateral talks, the two leaders exchanged nine key agreements, which include cooperation in areas such as defense, media, education, and social services, reflecting their mutual commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
