Abdoulaye Traore, a former celebrated international footballer for Ivory Coast, has received a three-year jail term for a rape conviction, as confirmed by a local women’s rights advocacy group.
Traore, who was a member of the Ivory Coast squad that secured the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations title and is a recognizable figure in the nation, was sentenced by a court in Bouaké.
The Ivorian League for Women’s Rights issued a statement characterizing the verdict as a notable step forward in the ongoing effort to combat impunity for sexual and gender-based violence.
Furthermore, the organization indicated that the court's ruling includes a requirement for Traore to pay 15 million CFA francs to the victim. The former player also faces a five-year prohibition from entering the central region.
According to a judicial source, Traore was found guilty of engaging in non- consensual sexual acts with a 21-year-old woman in March 2021. Prior to his retirement from active play, Traore was a prominent athlete for ASEC Mimosas in Abidjan and also had stints with European clubs such as FC Metz and SC Braga.
