Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state have publicly rejected what they termed "kangaroo endorsements" for aspirants vying for positions in the upcoming 2027 general elections. They have urged party members to disregard any claims of such endorsements.
Speaking on Saturday in Isan Ekiti during a meeting with party stakeholders from across the state, Fayemi expressed his disapproval of actions by "a few opportunists" who he accused of fostering division within the party through unauthorized endorsements.
In an apparent effort to reinforce internal party discipline, Fayemi emphasized that no aspirant should rely on clandestine endorsements, asserting that transparent and credible primary elections are essential.
He clarified that while consensus is a valid option when all aspirants agree, primaries would be necessary if such consensus could not be reached.
"Any serious aspirant must be ready to test their popularity and acceptability before party members," Fayemi stated, further advising those currently in elected office to focus on their performance and accountability rather than depending on political patronage.
The former governor also highlighted the critical need for strict adherence to the party's constitution and the Electoral Act, warning that any deviation could lead to unnecessary post-primary legal challenges.
Supporting this stance, the Ekiti APC Chairman, Sola Elesin, refuted any suggestions of endorsement by Governor Biodun Oyebanji, labelling such reports as "false, misleading, and driven by desperation."
Elesin assured party members that a fair and equitable process would be maintained, promising that the APC would uphold fairness, transparency, and internal democracy throughout the primary election period.
"APC remains a democratic party where all aspirants are free to campaign and engage with members without intimidation or interference," he added.
Stakeholders present at the meeting conveyed their confidence in the leadership of Fayemi and Governor Oyebanji, while also voicing concerns about emerging internal divisions within the party.
