During a Tuesday media briefing, Federal Capital Territory Minister [Nyesom Wike](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyesom_Wike) publicly demanded that ADC vice‑presidential hopeful [Rotimi Amaechi](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotimi_Amaechi) clarify the results of a US$10 million fumigation operation that was reportedly carried out in [Rivers State](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rivers_State) while Amaechi was governor.
Wike explained that Amaechi’s ambition to become Nigeria’s vice‑president warrants a thorough examination of his past actions, adding that voters deserve to know whether his promises were fulfilled. He emphasized that “you can’t just want to run for a position without anybody telling you the past. So, let Nigerians judge if all these things are correct.”
The minister recalled Amaechi’s earlier pledge to eradicate mosquitoes and malaria in the state, noting that a Cuban firm was allegedly paid $10 million for the fumigation. “You told Rivers people that you’re going to fumigate the state so they won’t be suffering from malaria, and you paid 10 million dollars to a company in Cuba. Could you tell Nigerians what is the effect of that fumigation?” Wike asked.
Wike also took issue with Amaechi’s accusations against [President Bola Tinubu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bola_Tinubu) and members of his administration, including labeling the president a thief. He argued that such allegations merit scrutiny because they can have broader implications beyond the individual office holder.
While stating he does not object to criticism of Tinubu, Wike insisted that Amaechi should first be prepared to answer questions about his own public record rather than present himself as an unblemished leader while campaigning for higher office.
