Etim Esin, a retired Nigerian footballer, has shared his experiences surrounding the controversial rape allegation in Belgium that disrupted his sporting career.
In a recent interview with sports presenter Charles Anazodo, Esin revealed that his disregard for advice from the late Stephen Keshi, who captained the Super Eagles, ultimately led to his difficulties in Belgium.
Esin remarked, “If I had heeded Keshi's advice to calm down and find stability in my life, perhaps I would have avoided many of the missteps I made. That was a key lesson for me.”
Further elaborating, Esin discussed his lifestyle in Belgium, which he confessed contributed to his legal issues.
He admitted to frequent partying and romantic entanglements, behaving as though the rules he followed in Nigeria applied similarly overseas.
“I got entangled in this rape case because I was living as though I was still in Nigeria, not realizing that the leniency I had accustomed myself to here did not translate there,” he remarked.
Regarding the allegations, Esin claimed that the individual involved was his girlfriend, asserting he was unaware that she was underage.
“She was just 16, and I had no clue. They can appear quite mature. If I had known, she wouldn't have been present,” he clarified.
Esin further stated that his own admission of having intimate relations with her, thinking she was his girlfriend, weakened his defense.
“My lawyer argued that I shouldn't have acknowledged it. Had I known the situation, I would have simply denied it or claimed I hadn’t slept with her. That unfortunately constituted another mistake on my part,” he explained.
