The GoNigeria Initiative has broadened its mandate, extending its focus from encouraging voter participation to actively campaigning for improvements in electoral processes, freedom of expression, judicial independence, and national security. The group asserts that these elements are fundamental to Nigeria's ongoing democratic advancement.
In a statement released on February 11, 2026, titled “Important Overview On Nigeria’s Democratic Path,” GoNigeria emphasized that as the nation works to reinforce its democratic structures, it is essential to ensure that democratic principles are deeply embedded.
The organisation highlighted that maintaining a robust democracy necessitates a profound grasp of democratic ideals, the structures that uphold them, and the individual conduct required for their sustained prosperity.
Evolution Of The Initiative
GoNigeria explained that its initial mission was centred on fostering greater citizen involvement in elections, especially among the youth.
The initiative was originally established to inspire extensive participation in the electoral cycle, with a particular emphasis on young citizens, the statement detailed.
It noted that young Nigerians were urged to register with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and play an active role in national elections.
However, the organisation has since decided to widen its area of concentration.
“GoNigeria considers it necessary to expand its mandate to include advocacy for electoral reform, freedom of speech, judicial reform, and the security of life and property,” it declared.
This expansion, the group explained, stems from the recognition that establishing a lasting democracy in Nigeria requires more than just holding periodic elections.
Electoral Reform At The Core
GoNigeria underscored that electoral reform is central to the legitimacy of any democracy, pointing out that elections serve as the principal mechanism for citizens to select their leaders.
It cautioned that elections marred by issues such as vote-buying, result manipulation, intimidation tactics, and ineffective electoral administration have frequently eroded public confidence in the democratic system.
According to GoNigeria, “Without credible elections, democracy risks becoming symbolic rather than substantive.”
Free Speech And Judicial Independence
The initiative also characterised freedom of speech as the vital essence of democratic governance, warning that “A democracy that silences dissent risks sliding into authoritarianism, even if elections continue to hold.”
Regarding the judiciary, the statement affirmed: “An independent, efficient, and credible judiciary is the backbone of constitutional democracy.”
It added a cautionary note: “When the judiciary is weak, politicized, or corrupt, democracy loses both its moral authority and legal foundation.”
Security As Democratic Foundation
Addressing the issue of security, the group stated that it remains a fundamental requirement for meaningful engagement in governance.
“Security is a fundamental precondition for democracy. Citizens cannot participate meaningfully in democratic processes under conditions of fear and violence,” it asserted.
GoNigeria further noted that the prevailing insecurity in Nigeria has weakened democracy by limiting citizen participation, diminishing institutional legitimacy, and disrupting economic activities.
The statement concluded with an appeal for citizens to actively engage and take responsibility for the democratic process.
“Join us and defend democracy.”
