The Nigerian Federal Government has initiated legal proceedings by filing a 13-count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja against individuals accused of plotting to unseat President Bola Tinubu.

Sixteen military officers, alongside a retired major general, a retired naval captain, and a serving police inspector, were apprehended on October 31, 2025. They are alleged to have been involved in schemes aimed at destabilising the current government.

The defendants face accusations of engaging in warfare against the Federal Republic of Nigeria and perpetrating acts that constitute treason and terrorism.

Earlier in January 2026, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) acknowledged the existence of a plot to overthrow President Tinubu. Samaila Uba, the DHQ's Director of Defence Information, stated at the time that investigations conducted according to established military protocols had identified personnel implicated in the coup conspiracy.

Uba had indicated that the implicated officers would face trials before appropriate military judicial panels.
