Domingos Simões Pereira, the leader of Guinea-Bissau’s opposition, is currently facing a military court regarding allegations of his involvement in multiple coup attempts.
Pereira, who heads the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), which played a key role in the country’s independence in 1974, has been under increasing legal scrutiny. This follows his arrest during a coup attempt in November that resulted in the ousting of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, occurring shortly after the presidential elections.
Despite being released last month, Pereira remains under house arrest due to separate inquiries into financial crimes. Military prosecutors have now accused him of being implicated in at least two coup attempts, which are said to have transpired in late 2023 and again in October 2025.
Authority figures indicate that the summons to the military court forms part of broader efforts to manage ongoing instability and alleged threats to the nation’s constitutional framework.
