The House of Representatives has formally demanded that the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency accelerate the completion of the Kirikiri Federal Road rehabilitation in the Ajeromi‑Ifelodun Federal Constituency of Lagos State, citing ongoing transport difficulties caused by the road’s poor condition. The call follows a motion tabled by Hon. Kalejaiye Adeboye Paul, which highlighted that despite a prior House resolution, significant stretches of the road remain unrepaired.
What resolution did the House adopt?
On 3 October 2023, the House passed Resolution HR. 192/10/2023 after reviewing a motion titled “The Need to Rehabilitate the Kirikiri Federal Road in Ajeromi‑Ifelodun Federal Constituency of Lagos State.” The resolution demanded immediate action to address the road’s deteriorating state.
Why is the project still incomplete?
Although FERMA later carried out extensive works on the Amuwo segment of the Kirikiri corridor, the portion that runs through Ajeromi‑Ifelodun was omitted. Lawmakers noted that this gap continues to impede residents, commuters, commercial transport operators and local businesses, affecting daily travel and the movement of goods.
What specific actions has the House requested?
The resolution instructs FERMA to:
- Conduct a thorough assessment of the Kirikiri Federal Road, with special focus on the Berger‑Suya axis.
- Review the quality of work already completed on previously rehabilitated sections.
- Identify any defective or sub‑standard repairs and rectify them according to approved engineering standards.
- Return to the neglected road corridors in Ajeromi‑Ifelodun and speed up work on all outstanding sections to achieve full completion.
How will compliance be monitored?
The House has tasked its Committees on Works and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency to oversee the implementation of the resolution, ensuring that FERMA meets the objectives set out in the 2023 directive and delivers a sustainable solution to the road’s decay.
The legislators emphasized that the 2023 resolution’s goals remain unfulfilled and that a renewed intervention is essential to guarantee that the Kirikiri Federal Road serves the community effectively and safely.
