How Ikenne Remo Built Self-Sustained Progress Without Government Reliance

Otunba Olufemi Allen, President of the Ikenne Development Association, discusses the community's self-driven infrastructural achievements as the town marks the 50th Ereke Day Festival in Ogun State.

Marking five decades of community-driven progress, the Ikenne Development Association (IDA) has steered numerous infrastructural milestones through voluntary contributions rather than relying solely on government intervention. In a recent interview, Otunba Olufemi Allen, the 10th president of the association, detailed the historical evolution, legal prominence, and security advancements of Ikenne Remo in Ogun State.

What is the history behind the Ereke Day celebration?

The association's roots trace back to 1975 when local leaders, including the late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo and pioneer patron Kolawole Oronti, mobilized residents to construct the town's inaugural assembly hall, which now serves as the Alakenne Palace. Following the establishment of the IDA in November 1977, the community dedicated the first Saturday of every November to the Ereke Day festival to galvanize financial and moral support for local projects.

Over the decades, the association has executed hundreds of projects spanning healthcare, water supply, security infrastructure, and education. Allen noted that during his current tenure, the IDA has successfully executed 65 distinct projects, adding to a historical total of 187 community-led initiatives since inception.

How does Ikenne maintain its unique legal legacy?

Beyond infrastructure, Ikenne holds a prominent position within Nigeria's legal landscape. The town has produced 13 Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN), alongside former federal attorneys-general and regional legal officers. Allen himself, a chartered accountant with over three decades of professional experience, pursued a law degree and was called to the bar at age 63, establishing a notable record within the locality.

What security measures are in place?

Addressing regional security concerns, the community established the Ikenne Security Coordinating Centre, equipped with advanced surveillance cameras monitored continuously to assist law enforcement agencies in tracking criminal activities and recovering stolen vehicles. Furthermore, the association plans to launch a 250 million naira security fund to bolster local patrols and cooperation with federal and state security formations during festive periods.

Looking toward future technological growth, leadership has also emphasized youth development and digital integration, aiming to position the historic town as a recognized center for artificial intelligence and technological innovation in the coming years.
