Political commentator Isaac Fayose has challenged the 2023 presidential standard-bearer of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, to forge a united front with alternative political groups to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) come 2027.
Fayose issued this appeal following reports of a physical assault directed at Sowore and his campaign entourage during a political outing in Ekiti State on Friday. Despite the incident, the commentator noted that he felt no sympathy for the activist politician, pointing to Sowore's frequent verbal attacks on other opposition leaders, including figures associated with the wider opposition spectrum.
According to Fayose, opposition actors share a singular adversary in the incumbent federal administration headed by President Bola Tinubu.
Why is Fayose calling for an opposition coalition?
In a video broadcast posted to his official social media channels, Fayose argued that splintered opposition efforts only weaken the collective push for democratic reform in the country.
"Instead of attacking Peter Obi, you can see now that we have a bigger enemy. APC led by President Bola Tinubu is the enemy of our country," Fayose stated in the recording.
He further claimed that democratic institutions are under threat and urged a cessation of internal opposition squabbling.
"They are the ones destroying our democracy, they are the ones killing our democracy. We need to come together to fight them," he added.
Recalling previous incidents of political violence in regions like Benue and Plateau states, Fayose criticized Sowore for maintaining a passive stance during past attacks on other political actors, while urging him to redirect his political strategy toward the ruling administration.
"I don't feel sorry for you. Leave Obi alone let us concentrate on the real enemy of the people which is APC. Let us join hands to chase them away," Fayose concluded.
