Jos Court Imposes 12-Month Jail Term on Man for Blackmailing Married Woman

A man named Abdullahi Usman has received a 12-month prison sentence in Jos, Plateau State, for luring a married woman and defaming her reputation. This ruling follows his guilty plea in court.

The Area Court in Jos, Plateau State has sentenced a man named Abdullahi Usman to one year in prison for attempting to entice a married woman and for defamation of her character.

Usman received his sentence on Wednesday after he admitted guilt regarding the charges against him.

Court proceedings related to blackmail case

Insp Ibrahim Gokwat, the police prosecutor, informed the court that the case was brought to the attention of the Angwan Rogo police station by Mr. Hamza Aliyu on November 24, 2025.

According to the complainant, the defendant had contacted his wife, urging her to meet him at a hotel; he threatened that if she did not comply, he would disclose to her husband that she had engaged in extramarital affairs and underwent several abortions as a result.

During a police inquiry, the prosecutor noted, the defendant confessed to committing the offense.

He mentioned that the act went against the Plateau State Penal Code of Northern Nigeria established in 2017.

After Usman's guilty plea, Judge Irene Pati sentenced him to prison, but also allowed him an option to pay a fine of N50,000 or serve a year in prison for the charges of enticement and defamation.
