A devastating morning fire at the Kofar Ruwa Timber Market in Kano State has razed 75 permanent buildings and 35 temporary structures. State firefighters swiftly responded to the scene, successfully containing the blaze and preventing further destruction.

A devastating morning inferno at the bustling Kofar Ruwa Timber Market in Kano State has left a trail of destruction, destroying 75 permanent buildings and 35 temporary structures. The emergency response by local firefighting personnel prevented the flames from consuming the entire commercial hub, though significant material losses were recorded.

According to official reports provided by the Kano State Fire Service, the emergency call regarding the disaster was logged at approximately 7:39 a.m. on Saturday. The incident severely impacted numerous sections of the market, which serves as a major economic center for timber merchants and allied traders within the northern commercial nerve center.

What caused the market inferno?

While the exact origin of the fire is yet to be formally determined, emergency responders noted that the blaze had already advanced across multiple zones of the market before fire engines arrived. Alhaji Abba, a local timber dealer, placed the initial distress call that triggered the urgent dispatch of multiple fire trucks from various metropolitan stations.

"We received a distress call from a timber dealer, Alhaji Abba, and immediately mobilised firefighters from various stations within the metropolitan area to the scene," stated PFS Kabiru Isah Jafaru, the Public Relations Officer for the state fire agency.

How did firefighters tackle the emergency?

Upon reaching the location, the firefighting crew encountered intense flames fueled by combustible wood products stacked across the commercial space. Despite the challenging conditions, the personnel deployed tactical containment measures to halt the spread of the fire to adjacent business premises.

Jafaru confirmed that the fire service successfully brought the situation under control, averting a more catastrophic outcome that could have engulfed neighboring sections of the market.

What safety precautions are authorities advising?

Following the disaster, the fire service renewed its appeal to traders, artisans, and business operators across the state to exercise heightened vigilance. Authorities emphasized the importance of adhering to strict safety protocols, particularly with the arrival of the dry harmattan season, which traditionally experiences an upsurge in fire incidents due to intense winds and low humidity.
