Nollywood star Kunle Remi has called on Nigerians to commemorate President Bola Tinubu’s birthday by sharing visuals from the recent tragic incident in Plateau State.
According to reports, several residents in the Gari Ya Waye community of Angwan Rukuba were killed on the night of Tinubu's 74th birthday.
In a video posted to his Instagram account, Remi expressed his severe disapproval of the violence and the country's ongoing deteriorating security situation.
He pointed to a widely circulated video that depicted a grieving mother holding her deceased son and lamenting the impact of the tragedy.
Remi stated, “Today marks the birthday of the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Let’s wish him a happy birthday while also honoring those in pain by using an image from this recent incident. If we truly wish our President joy on his birthday, let’s consider the suffering of others as part of our message.”
He further urged, “Those of you reading this who want to wish him a happy birthday, please utilize that video. There are quite a few images available online, and they depict the overwhelming sorrow experienced by many in Plateau State. Just a few hours ago, a calamity occurred there, and this is the type of message we should convey.”
Remi insisted that Nigerians have ample reason to celebrate Mr. Tinubu, asserting that the visuals and footage alone serve as sufficient representation of their sentiments.
His comments came as part of his broader critique of the President’s management of the nation’s security issues and poor economic conditions, alongside rising fuel prices.
Previously, he had condemned the government's reaction to the skyrocketing fuel costs and the negative consequences this has had on ordinary citizens and businesses alike. He lamented the unreliability of power supply in the country, emphasizing that many businesses are heavily reliant on generators, particularly as fuel prices climb. Remi, who is a father, queried how Nigeria, an oil-rich country, continues to be vulnerable to global supply fluctuations.
