Oba Simeon Olanipekun, the traditional ruler known as the Oniwo of Afin in Kwara State, has regained his freedom after his family paid an extra ₦12 million in ransom to kidnappers.
The monarch was released on the night of Wednesday, February 5, 2026, after enduring almost a month in captivity. This development comes two weeks after his son, Olaolu, was freed following the payment of an initial ₦20 million ransom.
A family member who preferred to remain anonymous disclosed that discussions and negotiations ultimately led to the release of the monarch.
"Indeed, the monarch was released on Wednesday evening after we provided ₦12 million and two power banks, in addition to the prior ₦20 million ransom. He was dropped off at a local settlement for herders close to Oreke in Ifelodun Local Government Area. From there, he was taken to a nearby military base in Oreke, where they reached out to us," the source reported.
Reports indicate that Oba Olanipekun is presently receiving medical care at an undisclosed facility following the physical and psychological toll he suffered during his abduction.
"He is currently in good spirits. The family and the entire Afin community express gratitude to everyone who contributed to ensuring his safe return," the source added.
The monarch, affectionately referred to as Aniwo I of Afin, was kidnapped on New Year’s Eve during a violent raid on his palace.
It was reported that approximately eight armed individuals invaded the palace around 8:00 p.m., firing indiscriminately before abducting both the monarch and his son.
The return of the traditional ruler has brought much-needed relief to the residents of Afin and surrounding areas, who have lived in fear since the incident.
This abduction is part of a troubling trend in Kwara State, marked by a surge in kidnapping incidents, raising alarms about security, particularly in rural regions. Community leaders and citizens continue to urge security forces and the state government to enhance their efforts to combat crime across the state.
