Michael Carrick anticipates remaining at the helm of Manchester United for their upcoming Champions League fixture against Roma. This comes in the wake of a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, which extended the club's winless streak to nine matches.

Michael Carrick stated that he anticipates retaining his position as Manchester United manager ahead of Tuesday's UEFA Champions League fixture against Roma. This declaration follows a 2-0 defeat away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, a result that deepens the club's struggles and stretches their winless sequence across all competitions to nine games.

Prior to this fixture, Carrick had already been granted a temporary reprieve by club leadership following a heavy 3-0 loss at home to Bournemouth, a match where many analysts anticipated his dismissal.

How did the match unfold at Stamford Bridge?

Manchester United produced a disciplined and improved display during the opening 45 minutes against Chelsea F.C., though they failed to capitalize on several clear opportunities to break the deadlock. The inability to convert early dominance proved costly after the interval.

Early in the second half, Morgan Rogers breached the central defensive line to register the game's opening goal. Shortly after, defender Lisandro Martinez received two quick yellow cards, culminating in a penalty kick. Cole Palmer successfully converted the spot-kick to secure the result and effectively end any prospects of a visiting comeback.

When questioned by broadcasters regarding his continuity on the bench for the impending European fixture, Carrick confirmed his expectation to lead the squad, telling TNT Sports: "Yes. We've got to move forward. We've got to take the things that we felt worked for us today and take a bit of belief and the confidence from that and a lot of the good things, especially in the first half."

What does this mean for United's season?

The ongoing negative run represents Manchester United's most prolonged winless sequence in 38 years. The club currently sits merely one point clear of the Premier League relegation zone, facing the genuine threat of dropping into the bottom three depending on results from other fixtures.

Reflecting on the stark contrast between the two halves of the game, Carrick noted: "From being in such a good place in the first half, the two halves of football couldn't probably be more further apart in some ways. I think the way they went about it and played, the quality of football and the way we played in the first half, definitely gives encouragement. We've got to take that."

Compounding their domestic difficulties, United have registered two losses in their opening three fixtures in the expanded European competition, leaving them in 20th position within the 36-team league table and under pressure to secure qualification for the knockout phases.
