New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani Loses X Verification Badge Days After Criticising Elon Musk

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's personal X account lost its verification checkmark on Friday, November 6, following a video critique of billionaire Elon Musk. The disappearance sparked online speculation about whether platform interference occurred, though no official reason has been provided.

On Friday, November 6, the personal X account of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani notably lacked its blue verification badge, just 48 hours after he released a video criticising tech billionaire Elon Musk in the wake of the United States midterm elections.

What caused the removal of the verification badge, and when exactly did it happen? While the sudden absence of the checkmark fueled rumors that Musk personally ordered the penalty, available reports did not confirm whether the tech executive intervened or if standard platform protocols were applied.

Mamdani published the video on Wednesday, November 4, following Democratic victories in the Tuesday polls. Titled "It’s morning again in America," the recording called on members of the Democratic Party to leverage their electoral momentum to tackle mounting living costs.

"Last night’s election proved: working people expect more from their government. And they’re tired of waiting," Mamdani stated in the footage.

The mayor targeted Vice President JD Vance for urging citizens to grant the current administration additional time to deliver on its commitments, countering that ordinary families cannot afford to delay covering housing, childcare, or food expenses for another two years.

Mamdani further addressed the growing political sway of ultra-wealthy individuals, specifically referencing Musk. "People are tired of being told that there isn’t enough to go around while Elon Musk becomes the world’s first trillionaire," he remarked.

Financial publication Forbes previously calculated that Musk's net worth hit $1 trillion in June 2026 following the initial public offering of SpaceX, though subsequent figures showed a dip below that milestone. Mamdani also criticized affluent donors for attempting to sway midterm outcomes through heavy financial contributions, directing his primary appeal at his party colleagues. "It is not enough to simply win power. We must use it," he urged.

By Friday, social media users began highlighting the stripped verification status on the handle @ZohranKMamdani. Inquiries ranged from whether the mayor lapsed on his X Premium subscription to whether executive action was taken. Grok, the platform's artificial intelligence chatbot, offered various theoretical causes while noting a lack of public proof linking Musk directly to the removal.

According to X's guidelines, a blue checkmark typically signifies an active paid subscription alongside compliance with platform criteria, rather than serving as an authentic identity confirmation. Routine profile updates, username modifications, subscription lapses, or policy infractions can trigger a temporary loss of the badge during administrative reviews.

Mamdani’s personal profile remains distinct from the official municipal handle, @NYCMayor, which operates under separate government account classifications. Regulatory scrutiny surrounding verification systems remains active, marked by a December 2025 ruling in which the European Commission penalized X for transparency issues related to its badge designs, a decision the company is currently contesting.

As of the November 6 reports, neither the mayor's office nor representatives for Musk had issued official statements clarifying the sudden absence of the verification mark.
