The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has firmly pushed back against assertions that insufficient gas supply or transportation constraints are behind the recent slump in electricity generation across the country.
According to a statement released by the company's Spokesperson, Andy Odey on Saturday, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC) records show no transportation-related constraints that could explain the decline in power output. The company insists that its gas transportation network remains fully available to power plants nationwide.
Odey disclosed that Nigeria's gas production volumes have grown by approximately 10 per cent year-to-date in 2026, indicating that the country is producing more gas than ever before.
He however cautioned that the mere availability of pipelines and transportation infrastructure does not automatically translate into actual gas deliveries or electricity generation. Several other factors, he noted, determine the performance of the gas-to-power value chain.
These include the availability and operational readiness of power generating units, plant maintenance schedules, and actual gas offtake by individual power stations. Odey explained that whether gas supplied to generating stations can be effectively converted into electricity depends on these additional variables.
NNPC has therefore called for a coordinated review of operational data involving gas suppliers, transporters, power generators, and the Nigerian Electricity System Operator (NISO) to identify the specific factors responsible for the electricity generation shortfall and recommend appropriate interventions.
The company stressed that accurate reporting across the entire gas-to-power value chain is essential to resolving the challenges and sustaining public confidence in the electricity sector.
"NNPC Limited supports a coordinated review of operational data by gas suppliers, transporters, power generators and NISO to identify specific constraints and guide effective interventions," Odey said.
He further added that the company remains committed to supporting the Federal Government's gas development and monetisation agenda through safe, reliable and efficient gas supply and transportation infrastructure.
"Our focus remains on dependable energy infrastructure and constructive collaboration that helps translate Nigeria's gas resources into more reliable electricity for Nigerians," the statement added.
