Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, is intensifying efforts to draw private sector capital into the state's coastal tourism sector. His administration is reportedly targeting between five and ten investors to convert the Araromi coastline into a prominent leisure destination.

Aiyedatiwa announced this initiative on Monday during the Araromi seaside carnival, held in the Ilaje Local Government Area. He underscored the importance of strategic alliances to fully leverage the region's substantial economic potential.

The governor highlighted that the coastline, extending approximately 72 kilometres and making it one of Africa's longest, has not yet attracted the investment needed to realise its full benefits.

He stated that the state government has commenced targeted actions to alter this situation by promoting the coastal asset on a global scale.

According to Aiyedatiwa, this initiative is designed to draw attention to the beach and stimulate interest from potential investors, a strategy that is already eliciting positive feedback.

He revealed that private sector involvement has begun, pointing to the involvement of a private operator who has introduced basic amenities such as shelters and a mobile kitchen to enhance the visitor experience.

The governor characterised this development as an indicator of growing confidence in the area, noting that such contributions are progressively improving the beach's appeal.

Speaking to residents and attendees, Aiyedatiwa reflected on the universal appeal of beach resorts, asserting that vacations are often perceived as incomplete without the tranquil setting of the ocean.

He referenced the historical significance of waterways, recalling his own journey from Obenla to Lagos by water in 1976, and emphasised the ocean's role in trade and exploration.

"The ocean has always been an integral part of our civilization. It is one of God’s wonders. From Araromi, you can connect with the world. That is why people gather by the seaside to relax, enjoy nature and breathe fresh, uncontaminated air," he stated.

The governor encouraged those present to embrace relaxation as a method for regaining strength and clarifying the mind, underscoring the ocean's health and recreational advantages.

He revealed that the state has completed land measurements and finalised designs for a new beach resort, which he assured would be operational by next year.

"We are intentional about this. The state government will lead, but we welcome investors to partner with us. Land is available for anyone ready to develop the beach into a convenient and relaxing resort," he remarked.

Addressing security concerns, Aiyedatiwa guaranteed that Ilaje Local Government Area and the proposed beach resort would be among the most secure locations in Nigeria.

"There is no kidnapping, no banditry. Maximum security will be ensured. The Atlantic Ocean flanks the area and the only access road will be properly manned. Our people know how to handle any threat," he affirmed.

He added that the government would take the lead in establishing a standard beach resort, which will be designed, constructed, and operated by the state, with construction scheduled to commence this year and conclude within a year.

The governor further emphasised that current and planned infrastructure projects, including the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, will be instrumental in supporting investment and improving access to the coastline.

He explained that the proximity of the highway to the beach corridor would significantly boost visitor numbers and economic activities.

The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Adesoji Afolabi, noted that the Easter carnival is part of efforts to revitalise the state's tourism sector, mentioning that this event is in its second iteration.

He explained that the initiative aims to attract international tourists and position Araromi beach as a global destination, adding that modern facilities such as chalets and reception areas are planned.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, praised the governor's vision, describing the initiative as a significant step towards showcasing the state's natural assets.

Chairman of Ese-Odo Local Government Area, Ebimobowei Caleb Molos, also commended the initiative, observing that tourism development would enhance livelihoods and foster industrial growth.

He disclosed that expatriates are anticipated to visit the area shortly to commence inspection and development processes, adding that the project would bring benefits to the entire state.
