A violent confrontation between political factions in Yankara, Katsina State, has resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries after youths blocked the convoy of Governor Dikko Umar Radda during a campaign tour.

A violent political confrontation in Yankara, located within the Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State, has left one person dead and numerous others injured following a disturbance involving supporters of the All Progressives Congress and alleged opposition sympathizers.

The incident transpired on Saturday, October 31, 2026, when local youths intercepted the motorcade of Governor Dikko Umar Radda while he journeyed toward Faskari town for a scheduled political rally.

According to local residents and eyewitnesses, the tension began when the governor's transit coincided with a children's Maulud procession along the main highway in Yankara village. Members of the governing party's entourage reportedly disembarked to clear the thoroughfare, which provoked nearby individuals suspected of backing opposition factions.

What triggered the violent altercation?

Witness accounts gathered from community members indicate that after the governor's vehicle successfully navigated the area, some youths began chanting opposition slogans such as "Ba mu yi," translating to "We are not supporting." This vocal dissent reportedly sparked a physical confrontation between the party loyalists and the local youths, resulting in one confirmed fatality.

Speaking on the disturbance, a local resident named Saleh Bala detailed the escalation of the violence. "Many people were injured as the political thugs used sticks, knives, and machetes during the scuffle. They looted shops, POS centres, and mobile phone charging centres," Bala stated, adding that residential properties and vehicles were also vandalized or set ablaze.

What is the broader context of political tension in the region?

This occurrence follows a similar security breach just three days prior in the Malumfashi area, where the governor's convoy encountered hostility while en route to Funtua for the launch of a re-election campaign. Following the Malumfashi incident, the ruling party issued a condemnation, and law enforcement authorities confirmed the apprehension of 14 suspects.

As of the reporting time, official statements from the police or party representatives regarding the Yankara clash were still pending.
