Nigerian opposition parties have announced a significant agreement to consolidate their efforts by nominating a single presidential candidate for the upcoming 2027 general elections. This pact aims to present a unified challenge against the governing All Progressives Congress (APC).
The resolution was formalized during a national summit for opposition political parties held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
Key parties that attended the summit and committed to the agreement include the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), the National Democratic Convention (NDC), the Labour Party (LP), the Alliance for a Progressive Party (APP), the Accord Party, the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), the Advanced Allied Party (AA), the Democratic Labour Party (DLA), the Youth Party (YP), the Action Democratic Party (ADP), and the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, Taminu Turaki (SAN), the factional National Chairman of the PDP, highlighted the move as a critical step to reclaim Nigeria from what he described as the APC's control, emphasizing the necessity for the nation's recovery.
"We shall work towards fielding one presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, which shall be agreed and supported by all participating opposition parties to rescue our nation and her long-suffering masses," the group stated in their official communiqué.
Furthermore, the summit expressed strong dissatisfaction with the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). A vote of no confidence was passed on the INEC chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, who was accused of bias in favor of the ruling party.
The participating parties issued a stern warning, suggesting that Amupitan's continued tenure could precipitate a national crisis and demanded his replacement with a neutral individual to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
