The [Federal Government](https://www.gov.ng/) and the [Imo State Government](https://www.immogov.ng/) have agreed to suspend operations at the [Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Mbakwe_International_Cargo_Airport) in Owerri for roughly 25 days, beginning on 20 October 2026, to undertake essential runway repairs and an extension.
**Why is the airport closing?**
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo announced that the shutdown is vital to safeguard aviation safety, increase the airport’s handling capacity and improve operational efficiency ahead of the traditional Christmas travel rush to the South‑East.
**What works will be carried out?**
The rehabilitation will address worn‑out sections of the runway pavement, treat extensive surface cracks and fill potholes. In addition, the extension work is designed to enable the airport to accommodate larger, wide‑body aircraft, subject to the relevant regulatory approvals.
**Who approved the project?**
The decision follows an agreement between the [Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)](https://www.faannigeria.org/), Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodinma and other regional stakeholders. Keyamo praised the collaboration, noting that a modernised airport will serve as a crucial gateway for businesses and support the region’s economic development.
**How will passengers be affected?**
The Ministry acknowledged the inconvenience the closure will cause to travellers but stressed that safety cannot be compromised. The temporary halt will give contractors unrestricted access to complete the upgrades efficiently.
Passengers with bookings during the 25‑day period are urged to contact their airlines promptly to arrange cancellations, rescheduling or alternative travel arrangements. Authorities have pledged ongoing engagement with airlines and other stakeholders to minimise disruption, with the exact reopening date to be communicated through official channels.
