Oyo Attack Survivor Recounts Ordeal as Suspected Robbers Murder Wife

A resident of Ibadan has recounted the harrowing home invasion by suspected armed robbers who stabbed his wife to death and inflicted life-threatening injuries on him. The suspects were subsequently apprehended by operatives of the Oyo State Police Command.

Alhaji Wahab Olatokunbo, a resident of the Wofun area in Olodo, Ibadan, has shared the chilling details of a midnight home invasion by suspected armed robbers that resulted in the tragic death of his wife, Mrs. Rukayat Olatokunbo, and left him with severe injuries. The Oyo State Police Command subsequently arrested suspects in connection with the crime.

The incident occurred in the early hours of August 4, 2026, when armed intruders broke into the residence through the kitchen window. According to the victim, the hoodlums confronted his wife before forcing their way into his bedroom armed with cutlasses, knives, and a pestle. Despite his pleas, the attackers subjected him to brutal stabbings and machete cuts that exposed his intestines and fractured his hand.

"Tobi started stabbing me, and I was trying to stop him, dragging the knife with him. My wife knelt and started begging them not to kill me, but from my back, Matthew struck my head with a machete," Olatokunbo narrated while speaking about the assault from his hospital recovery.

When the assailants believed Mr. Olatokunbo had succumbed to his injuries, they turned on his wife, stabbing her multiple times in the chest. Mrs. Olatokunbo collapsed and died at the scene. The attackers also stole foreign currency, mobile phones, and attempted to assault other female family members present in the house.

What saved the family from further atrocities?

Despite his debilitating injuries, Mr. Olatokunbo managed to drag himself toward the sliding door and out into the compound, where he raised a loud alarm. The sudden shouts frightened the intruders, forcing them to abandon their mission and flee the premises without fully executing their plans against the remaining occupants.

"As I was within my compound, I started shouting 'armed robbers, armed robbers' to alert neighbours," he recalled.

Medical Emergency and Survival

Following the departure of the criminals, the victim was initially rejected by three medical facilities before receiving emergency stabilization at a fourth clinic. Due to the severity of his internal injuries, including a pierced spine and massive blood loss that dropped his packed cell volume (PCV) to 21 percent, he was transferred to the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan. Surgeons at UCH performed an extensive emergency operation to clean his internal organs and address severe internal bleeding.

His 19-year-old daughter, a student at Kwara State University, also recounted hearing her father's desperate cries before hiding in a toilet as the intruders ransacked the house. The family is now calling on the authorities to ensure justice is served swiftly.
