Passenger Dies As Freight Truck Overturns Along Gbagada Axis In Lagos

An elderly passenger lost his life on Sunday after a heavily loaded truck suffered a tyre blowout and overturned along the Gbagada axis heading towards Oshodi in Lagos State. Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed that the victim was flung from the cabin during the accident.

An elderly male passenger died on Sunday following a fatal road accident involving a commercial freight vehicle along the Gbagada corridor heading towards Oshodi in Lagos State. The incident, which disrupted traffic flow, happened when a Mercedes-Benz six-tyre truck conveying diverse merchandise and event equipment suffered a sudden front tyre blowout while moving at high velocity.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the driver lost control of the heavy-duty automobile, causing it to swerve and tumble. During the impact, an elderly male occupant seated in the front passenger compartment was ejected from the cabin. Officials confirmed that he sustained fatal head injuries after striking a hard surface and died instantly at the location.

What safety agencies responded to the crash?

Operatives from the LASTMA Night Rescue Team swiftly mobilized to the crash site, securing the perimeter to prevent secondary collisions and moving the victim into a Lagos State Emergency Medical Services vehicle. Additional support during the rescue operation was provided by officers attached to the Pedro Police Division alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

Clearing the wreckage proved challenging due to the heavy load onboard. Authorities explained that towing the mangled vehicle required offloading the assorted goods and newly branded event chairs into another haulage truck before the main wreckage could be cleared from the thoroughfare.

Why are officials raising safety concerns?

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, deplored the tragedy as entirely preventable, appealing directly to transporters and drivers of heavy commercial vehicles to respect speed limits and conduct routine mechanical checks. He emphasized that excessive speeding severely diminishes a driver's ability to navigate unexpected mechanical failures, such as tyre blowouts.

This incident adds to a troubling pattern of heavy vehicle accidents across commercial centers in Lagos. Official statistics released by traffic regulators indicated that between January and March of this year, road incidents across the state accounted for 69 fatalities and 246 injuries, alongside hundreds of documented traffic infractions involving articulated lorries. Similar high-profile accidents previously recorded include a 2025 container spill along the Cele Expressway that claimed a pedestrian's life and an October truck rollover near the Berger Bridge along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway that resulted in four deaths.
