Former Arsenal great Paul Merson has launched a scathing critique of Manchester United's recruitment approach, pointing out five recent acquisitions that he believes the club's board should have avoided. Making his remarks prior to Manchester United's European fixture against AS Roma, the pundit questioned the decision-making process at Old Trafford, highlighting Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, Youri Tielemans, and Andre Santos as proof of flawed planning.
Merson contended that while bolstering the attacking department should have been the primary objective, the forwards secured by the management lack the clinical edge required to elevate the squad. He specifically remarked that Cunha, Sesko, and Mbeumo do not possess the record of delivering 20 to 25 goals per campaign.
Why did Merson question the midfield additions?
Moving beyond the frontline, Merson expressed bewilderment over the acquisition of Andre Santos, questioning the rationale behind a fifty-million- pound investment. Regarding Youri Tielemans, the analyst noted that the midfielder suffers from a lack of adequate mobility and support within the current Manchester United setup.
Merson also dismissed suggestions that the club plans to shift its focus toward defensive reinforcements in the upcoming transfer window, labeling the overarching strategy as sheer madness.
