Pope Leo XIV has made an urgent call for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as violence between Israel and Iran continues to escalate, leading to a rising death toll.
During the Sunday Angelus prayer in Vatican City on March 15, Leo addressed the situation, stating, "On behalf of the Christians of the Middle East and all individuals of goodwill, I implore those responsible for this conflict: cease fire."
The pontiff, who is the first American to hold the position, remarked that the local populace has endured the "horrific violence of war" for two weeks since the fighting began.
"Thousands of innocent lives have been lost, and many others have been compelled to abandon their homes. I once again extend my prayers for all who have experienced loss due to attacks on schools, hospitals, and residential neighborhoods," he added.
Leo further emphasized that "violence can never result in the justice, stability, and peace that the people desperately seek."
