Portugal national team coach [Jorge Jesus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorge_Jesus) has indicated that [Cristiano Ronaldo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cristiano_Ronaldo) could be welcomed back into the squad should he choose to return, even though the striker recently left the group.
The tension started last week when Jesus kept the 41‑year‑old on the bench during Portugal's opening victory over Norway. Ronaldo then walked out of the camp on Wednesday after learning he would not start in the upcoming match with Denmark.
‘For me, Cris, in the next call‑up, if he is playing for [Al‑Nassr FC](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Nassr_FC), he remains eligible for selection,’ Jesus told reporters, referring to the forward’s Saudi club. ‘If he wishes, he can re‑join the national side.’
Jesus added that if Ronaldo wants to discuss his future before Portugal’s November fixtures, a meeting can be arranged.
‘Should he want to, just as we did before this call‑up, we can talk ahead of the next selection,’ the coach continued. ‘Ultimately, the decision rests with Cris.’
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United attacker is Portugal’s all‑time leading scorer and the most‑capped player in its history.
Jesus explained that he had told Ronaldo he needed his presence in the squad for his inaugural games in charge after succeeding Roberto Martínez following the 2026 World Cup.
‘Cristiano should conclude his international career on his own terms; the choice is his,’ Jesus said.
‘That is how our conversation went – I told him, “I need you.” In my first selection I said, “I need you, I need you close to me, whether you play or not, I need you.” The same message stands today.’
