A pregnant woman traveling across Lagos on a popular commercial Danfo bus experienced sudden labor mid-journey, prompting fellow passengers and onlookers to assist with the delivery inside the vehicle. Medical responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) arrived at the scene and helped stabilize both the mother and the newborn boy before transporting them to a nearby healthcare facility for post-natal care.
According to LASEMA, the woman was already in transit when her labor began unexpectedly, and commuters quickly stepped in to help with the delivery. Some passengers reportedly went into prayer sessions for a safe outcome while others assisted directly.
The birth was captured in viral footage showing the moment the baby boy was delivered safely. Witnesses suggested naming the child Abiona, a traditional Yoruba name associated with a child born along the road or during travel.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed the incident, stating: 'In a swift response, LASEMA arrived at the scene to assist a pregnant woman who went into sudden labor while waiting for transport. The woman delivered a healthy baby boy. Both mother and child were stabilized by LASEMA paramedics before being transported to a nearby healthcare facility for post-nal care.'
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in Lagos. A similar event took place at Onipanu Bus Stop along Ikorodu Road, where a pregnant woman also went into sudden labor while waiting for transport. LASEMA responded promptly in that case as well.
The incident highlights the importance of emergency preparedness on public transportation routes across the state, particularly in areas where medical facilities may be farther away than expected.
