President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will leave Abuja on Thursday for Makkah to perform Umrah and, before departing, will commission newly acquired Nigerian Air Force equipment at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. He is expected to return to Nigeria the following week.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to depart Abuja on Thursday for Makkah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to undertake the Umrah pilgrimage, and will also commission newly procured equipment for the Nigerian Air Force at the Presidential Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport before leaving the country.

The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, in a statement released on Wednesday. Onanuga said the journey would provide the head of state with a chance for spiritual reflection, devotion, and “prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity, stability, and continued progress.” While in Makkah, Tinubu will perform the religious rites associated with Umrah, seeking divine guidance and blessings for the nation and its citizens.

What will be commissioned before the trip?

According to the statement, the President will use the time before his departure to commission at the airport’s Presidential Wing certain pieces of equipment recently acquired by the Nigerian Air Force for its operational needs. The specific nature of the equipment was not disclosed, but the move underscores the administration’s focus on bolstering the country’s defence capabilities.

When is the President expected to return?

Onanuga indicated that Tinubu is likely to be back in Nigeria the week after his pilgrimage, though an exact date was not provided. The brief absence is intended to combine religious duties with a symbolic endorsement of the armed forces’ new assets.

Why is the Umrah pilgrimage significant for the President?

Umrah is a non‑obligatory Islamic pilgrimage that allows Muslims to perform a set of rites in the Holy City of Makkah. For a head of state, the journey often serves both personal spiritual purposes and a platform to convey prayers for national welfare, as highlighted in the adviser’s remarks.

The statement also emphasized that the President’s itinerary reflects a balance between personal faith obligations and official responsibilities, reinforcing his commitment to both the spiritual and security dimensions of national leadership.

Overall, the planned departure illustrates a blend of religious devotion and strategic engagement with the military, signalling Tinubu’s intent to seek divine favor while advancing Nigeria’s defence readiness.
