Prince Yormie Johnson Was A Liberator And Pan-Africanist, Says Widow Amira

Amira Johnson, widow of the late Liberian senator and political kingmaker Prince Yormie Johnson, has reflected on her husband's legacy, their years in exile in Nigeria, and her recent spiritual visit to The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations in Lagos. Speaking in an exclusive interview, she addressed his complex political history, his developmental impact in Nimba County, and her ties to current Liberian leadership.

Reflecting on the complex legacy of her late husband, Amira Johnson, the widow of prominent Liberian politician Prince Yormie Johnson, has described him as a dedicated liberator and pan-Africanist rather than a mere warlord. During a recent visit to Nigeria for spiritual rejuvenation, she discussed her family's historical ties to the West African giant, her late husband's enduring influence in Nimba County, and her relationship with the current Liberian administration.

Prince Yormie Johnson, widely known as PYJ, passed away on November 28, 2024, at the age of 72. A former military officer, senator, and two-time presidential candidate, he wielded significant political leverage as a kingmaker in Nimba County, the second-most populous region in Liberia. His widow emphasized that despite harsh historical criticisms, his primary motivation was freeing and developing his people.

Why did she visit Nigeria after her husband's passing?

Mrs. Johnson explained that her return to Nigeria was primarily spiritual, centering on a visit to The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) in Lagos. During the height of the Liberian civil crisis, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) relocated her family to Nigeria, where they lived for 14 years under the protection and administration of former Nigerian leaders such as General Ibrahim Babangida. During those years, the family forged deep spiritual bonds with the late Prophet TB Joshua and Pastor Mrs. Evelyn Joshua. Returning to the church provided her with solace following the deaths of both her husband and, subsequently, her son.

"The food, the workers, everything is in the same standard. Nothing has dropped beneath the standard they maintained when the prophet was alive," Mrs. Johnson noted regarding SCOAN's continuity under Pastor Mrs. Evelyn Joshua.

What was Prince Yormie Johnson's true character behind closed doors?

Addressing the public perception of her late husband as a stern military figure, Mrs. Johnson revealed a compassionate, family-oriented side that few outsiders witnessed. She noted that while he was cautious and difficult to access for strangers, he was intensely loyal to his inner circle and dedicated to uplifting the marginalized.

"My late husband was known as a strong man, a very strong man. However, what many people do not know is that he had a very soft side. He was a family- oriented person," she stated. She added that his philanthropic efforts in Nimba County included establishing a junior secondary school, a high school, a church, and the PYJ Polytechnic University, the main auditorium of which he named in honor of late Togolese President Gnassingbé Eyadéma.

What is her stance on current Liberian politics and her own future?

Despite heavy grief from losing both her husband and her son, Mrs. Johnson maintains a cordial relationship with the current Liberian administration led by President Joseph Boakai. She pointed out that Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung Sr. is a direct political protégé of her late husband. While community members in vote-rich Nimba County have approached her to step into the political arena, she indicated that any future political ambition would likely be rooted in her home region of Grand Kru County rather than Nimba, though her dedication to supporting women, children, and the elderly remains steadfast.
