Raheem Sterling has made a move to Feyenoord for the remainder of the season following a mutual parting with Chelsea in January, concluding a difficult phase at Stamford Bridge and opting for a new beginning in the Netherlands.
The 31-year-old winger had been a free agent since leaving Chelsea during the winter transfer window. After considering several proposals from various clubs in England and across Europe, he ultimately chose Feyenoord, where he will be under the guidance of former Manchester United and Arsenal player, Robin van Persie.
“As a free agent, I’ve had, for the first time in a long time, the opportunity to control the next step in my career. I wanted to take my time to speak with clubs and their head coaches to better understand the role they envisioned for me and ensure that I can add real value in this next chapter,” he remarked.
“Having spoken extensively with Robin, I’m confident that Feyenoord is a place where I can find happiness and establish myself as an essential part of the team. Playing abroad presents a new challenge for me, and I’m eagerly prepared to embrace it. Honestly, I’m just thrilled to get started.”
Currently, Feyenoord holds the second position in the Eredivisie, sitting 17 points behind league leaders PSV and is striving for a spot in the Champions League.
Robin van Persie expressed his enthusiasm about the signing, stating: “It’s a fantastic accomplishment for us to have convinced a player of Raheem’s stature to join our ranks. His football background speaks volumes. He is a player whose abilities can undoubtedly change the dynamics of a match, and I firmly believe he will become a key asset to our team as we aim for success in the latter half of the season.”
Reports suggest that approximately 18 clubs expressed interest in the winger, who reached a settlement regarding the last 18 months of his contract with Chelsea, which was reportedly valued at over £300,000 weekly.
His departure marks the end of an unsatisfactory stint in west London. Acquired for £47.5 million in 2022, Sterling scored 19 goals and provided 15 assists over 81 appearances for Chelsea. He was sidelined from the current season’s roster by former manager Enzo Maresca. Last year, he spent a loan spell at Arsenal, contributing only one goal in 28 matches.
The transfer to Feyenoord signifies a major transition for the forward, who experienced the peak of his career at Manchester City. In his seven years at the Etihad Stadium, he netted 131 goals across 339 games, clinching four Premier League titles, five EFL Cups, and one FA Cup.
Now, he hopes that joining the Eredivisie, known for its offensive gameplay, will rejuvenate his career and allow him to regain the form that established him as one of England's top attacking talents.
