Renewed Hope group probes alleged police harassment of Tinubu supporters in Imo

The Southeast chapter of Renewed Hope for Greater Nigeria has opened an investigation into accusations that the Nigeria Police Force Cybercrime Centre was used to intimidate and attempt to arrest President Bola Tinubu's supporters in Imo State, following a court order protecting a senior governor adviser.

The Southeast chapter of [Renewed Hope for Greater Nigeria (RHGN)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renewed_Hope_for_Greater_Nigeria), a pro‑President Bola Tinubu organisation, has launched an inquiry into allegations that the [Nigeria Police Force Cybercrime Centre](https://www.npf.gov.ng/cybercrime-centre) in Abuja was deployed to harass and seek the arrest of Tinubu supporters and campaigners in Imo State.

**What court order was issued?**

A ruling by Hon. Justice Emeka Orafu of the [Imo State High Court](https://www.imo.gov.ng/high-court) barred the police and any other parties covered by the order from arresting, harassing, inviting, or contacting Prince Collins Opurozor, the Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Electronic and Creative Media.

**Why is RHGN investigating?**

In a statement released in Enugu and signed by its Media Officer, Dr. Chijioke Edeh, RHGN said the circumstances raised serious doubts about the treatment of pro‑Tinubu voices in Imo and warranted a thorough probe. The group warned that while critics of President Bola Tinubu can speak freely, those defending him face intimidation, which it described as an unacceptable assault on democratic freedom.

**How did the dispute begin?**

The controversy stems from a clash between Opurozor and Mazi Chima Matthew Amadi, the Action Peoples Party (APP) candidate for Imo East Senatorial District. Amadi allegedly approached the Cybercrime Centre in a move Opurozor interpreted as an attempt to silence his criticism. The confrontation led to the court order restricting police actions against Opurozor.

The Orlu Political Action Committee welcomed the ruling, calling it a warning against using security agencies to settle political scores. RHGN said it would examine whether the police facility was weaponised to target individuals because of their political views or support for Tinubu.

**What response does RHGN promise?**

RHGN pledged to respond firmly to any proven misuse of law‑enforcement against the President’s supporters. It said its investigation would identify those responsible and present credible evidence to the appropriate authorities. "It is an affront to democratic values if critics of the President can speak freely while those defending him are subjected to intimidation to force them into silence. We will not overlook this matter. Where wrongdoing is established, those responsible must be held accountable," the statement read.

The group stressed that its intervention aims to protect political freedom and lawful participation, not to shield anyone from legitimate police investigations. It called on police authorities to ensure the Cybercrime Centre and other units operate strictly within the law, free from political interference, and to fully comply with the court order.

RHGN affirmed that its commitment to President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda remains unshaken, warning that any proven abuse of police powers will be pursued through the proper channels until the circumstances are clarified and any culpable persons are held accountable.
