The Future Olympian Athletics Classic has been rescheduled from the first quarter to the last quarter of 2026. This change aims to transform the competition into a truly national event.

In a statement by Bruce Ijirigho, a former quarter-miler and Team Nigeria captain for the Montreal 1976 Olympics, the delay will enable the Organising Committee to create a more comprehensive national framework, welcoming participants from all six geopolitical zones instead of focusing on select regions.

The event is being organised by The Youth Sports Renaissance Foundation (YSRF), a non-profit registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and founded by Bruce Ijirigho, Godwin Obasogie, and Charlton Ehizuelen. This initiative seeks to enhance sports development, especially athletics, within secondary schools throughout Nigeria.

Ijirigho, serving as the Project Lead, emphasized that the Future Olympian Athletics Classic aims not to replace existing structures but to reinstate a previously effective development model. He elaborated on how the program is designed to rekindle the culture that allowed him and many peers to be noticed during their formative years, receive adequate coaching, and earn sports scholarships that helped them balance academics and athletics. Many former athletes have achieved national, continental, and global success as a result.

He stated, "The primary challenge facing sports in Nigeria and many African nations is that young talents are not identified early enough and that they often miss out on modern coaching methodologies tailored for their developmental stages."

Ijirigho elaborated on the competition's focus, saying, "The Future Olympian Athletics Classics aims to identify young athletes during their early teenage years, while also facilitating international coaching clinics to impart skills onto coaches for enhanced success. This approach aspires to cultivate these young talents into Olympians and world-class performers by their late teens and early twenties. Thus, this competition will be exclusively for high school students as part of a developmental framework."

The rationale for broadening the event's scope was also discussed. Ijirigho noted that talent exists throughout Nigeria, thus the goal is to ensure equal opportunities for student-athletes across all regions.

He remarked, "There are many capable middle- and long-distance runners, as well as sprinters and jumpers, who have either gone unrecognized or identified too late. The postponement will enable us to expand our outreach to provide every young athlete with a fair chance."

Confident in Nigeria's athletic capabilities, Ijirigho asserted that with appropriate developmental structures, the nation can excel in global athletics. He concluded, "We possess the potential to lead in athletics worldwide; we just need to implement an effective development plan. The Future Olympians Athletics Classic will be instrumental in achieving this for our youth and Nigeria when it launches in late 2026."
