Sanwo-Olu orders swift road repairs across Lagos as dry season arrives

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the State Public Works Corporation to start immediate road reconstruction throughout Lagos State, using the dry season to address deteriorating infrastructure and improve traffic flow.

Governor [Babajide Sanwo-Olu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babajide_Sanwo- Olu) has instructed the [State Public Works Corporation](https://lspwc.lagosstate.gov.ng) to commence urgent road reconstruction and rehabilitation across Lagos State, taking advantage of the current dry season to fix crumbling streets and boost connectivity.

The corporation’s General Manager, Engr. Tokunbo Ajanaku, announced the directive on Thursday while touring ongoing projects, assuring Lagos residents that the improved weather will enable faster construction work.

Which roads are being targeted?

Ajanaku highlighted that the Oshodi‑Isolo Local Government Area is a primary focus, with works under way on Godwin Omonuwa Road, Taiwo Street, Salamotu Street, Peter Agah Street and Ibeh Street.

He explained that the governor’s order aims to close infrastructure gaps and enhance movement within neighbourhoods.

"These roads are vital links within the [Oshodi‑Isolo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oshodi-Isolo) corridor, serving commuters, traders and business owners every day. Their reconstruction will not only ease mobility but also cut transport costs, improve safety, stimulate commerce and create a more business‑friendly environment," Ajanaku said.

What other projects are in progress?

The inspection also covered rehabilitation works on Ogunnusi Road in Ojodu LCDA, Awolowo Way in Ikeja, Lanre Awolokun Road and Idowu Olaitan Street in Shomolu, as well as the Idimu‑Ikotun Road in Alimosho.

Ajanaku noted that heavy rains usually hinder asphalt laying, but the agency carried out emergency palliative measures during the rainy season to keep key routes passable. With the return of dry weather, the focus is shifting to more durable, comprehensive repairs.

How are the works being carried out?

Much of the maintenance and asphalt‑laying is performed at night, under strict safety protocols, to reduce traffic congestion in the metropolis.

The manager appealed for public patience, explaining that road works are prioritised based on condition, traffic volume and urgency, and that the corporation will gradually expand its activities to other parts of the state.

He also urged residents to protect public infrastructure by avoiding actions that damage roads, such as dumping waste in drainage channels, spilling petroleum products or discharging wastewater onto streets.

"Our roads are our collective heritage. Government has the responsibility to provide and maintain them, but citizens also have a duty to protect them. Road preservation must therefore be a shared responsibility," Ajanaku concluded.
