The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria has named Professor Ahmad Bello Dogarawa as its fresh Secretary-General to succeed the late Mallam Nafiu Baba Ahmad, who passed away recently after dedicating his life to the service of Islam and humanity.
Sheikh Professor Bashir Aliyu Umar, the president of the religious body, made the announcement in an official statement released on Saturday. According to the council, the transition is designed to reinforce its institutional leadership, drive forward its core mandates, and champion Islamic principles through rigorous scholarship, public advocacy, and meaningful participation in national discourse.
Who is Professor Ahmad Bello Dogarawa?
Professor Dogarawa is an academic and Islamic scholar. He currently lectures as a Professor of Accounting at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, with extensive research interests spanning Islamic jurisprudence, non-interest finance, Islamic economics, social development, and peace-building initiatives across the country.
His academic credentials include a PhD in Accounting and Finance from Ahmadu Bello University alongside a Master’s degree in Banking and Finance obtained from Bayero University, Kano. Furthermore, he is recognized as a Certified Management Trainer and holds a fellowship with the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria.
The council highlighted that Dogarawa has a rich history of contributing to Muslim institutional growth and Islamic scholarship in Nigeria. His background includes concerted efforts against extremist ideologies, fostering peaceful co-existence, and applying his administrative expertise toward policy formulation and institutional governance.
What are the expectations for his tenure?
Leadership within the organization expressed strong optimism that Dogarawa's academic background, professional pedigree, and dedication to Islamic tenets will significantly boost the council's operational capacity and fulfill its broader mission.
In light of the new transition, the religious body has appealed to its members, diverse Islamic societies, prominent clerics, traditional rulers, and the general Muslim populace to extend their full cooperation to the newly appointed scribe as he assumes office.
The council also offered prayers for divine guidance, wisdom, and fortitude for Dogarawa, while paying glowing tributes to the late Nafiu Baba Ahmad, noting that his invaluable sacrifices will remain permanently recorded in the annals of both the council and the nation at large.
