Nigeria’s leading premium live music ensemble, Shuga Band, commemorated the first anniversary of its late founder, Akinloye Tofowomo – popularly known as Akiin Shuga – by launching a redesigned logo that enshrines his memory.
What was unveiled?
The band spent the entire month of October showcasing the new visual identity across all its owned media channels and incorporated the design into every engagement throughout the month.
Why is the new logo significant?
The emblem features a portrait of the revered founder holding a microphone, symbolising the professionalism and musical excellence he championed for most of his career. To deepen his legacy, the group also released Best of Akiin Shuga on streaming platforms, a curated collection of his live performances.
How does this fit into the band’s history?
For over twenty‑five years, Shuga Band has been a benchmark in Nigeria’s live‑music scene. The latest branding effort adds another layer of structure as the group moves forward without its founder. Earlier this year, the band introduced a Valentine medley for lovers and announced the formation of a high‑calibre advisory board tasked with providing strategic oversight.
What recent events have highlighted the band’s relevance?
Shuga Band continues to convert skeptics into loyal clients, performing at high‑profile occasions such as Dr. Muiz Banire’s 60th birthday celebration, Seplat’s Nigerian Content Day, Prince Nduka Obaigbena’s 67th birthday, FCMB’s Sheventures, and the 10th anniversary of Shuttlers, among many others.
Who commented on the legacy?
“Our founder, Akiin Shuga, taught us that music is service to people, to God and joy itself. He advocated for a structured industry built on integrity, trust and professionalism, and our ability to sustain his legacy is a testament to those values,” said Maria Tofowomo, COO of the band.
Business Manager Jerry Odeh added, “We are grateful for the support that we have enjoyed from all our stakeholders in the last one year. The strong values of service, excellence and professionalism established by our founder and maestro, Akiin Shuga, have been our compass. With such a solid legacy backbone, Shuga Band is now being established as a generational brand. We will continue to innovate and ensure effective service delivery for all our stakeholders.”
What about the Shuga Limb Foundation?
The foundation, a passion project of the late founder and an anti‑polio champion, remains active. In celebration of World Polio Day, it empowered two physically challenged individuals: one received shoemaking tools and the other a wheelchair, enabling them to earn a livelihood and improve mobility. The initiative is overseen by the Shuga Limb Foundation.
Founded in 1998 by the Berklee College of Music‑trained virtuoso Akinloye Tofowomo, Shuga Band has become one of the few long‑serving live entertainment groups in Nigeria and across Africa. Until his untimely death on 30 October 2025, Akiin Shuga led the band in entertaining Nigeria’s elite, performing for three serving presidents and the nation’s top five billionaires. He also served as President of the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria (AMBON), cementing his place in the industry’s hall of fame.
